Chapter 31

Snow White couldn’t keep her eyes off the Magic Mirror of Queen Teryl. It was beautiful and massive, but it also scared her. It had immense power burning within it. The magic made the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end.

How am I going to cart that mirror out of here?

The dragon opened one lazy eye and looked at her. She pulled out her sword, ready to defend herself. It may have been a futile gesture, but she wasn’t about to just let this creature eat her without putting up a fight.

“Are you here to release me from my enchantment?” the dragon asked.

Its voice was worn down and sad. It was in her mind, like most animals, but it was talking directly out of its mouth too.

Snow White lowered her sword. “What enchantment?”

“The Star King’s enchantment. Are you here to break it?”

“I’m sorry, but I don’t know how.”

The dragon gave such a lonely sigh that Snow White knew with certainty that it didn’t mean her any harm. The emotions she sensed coming from it didn’t give her any indication that it was dangerous: in fact, quite the opposite. It radiated friendliness and deep-seated loneliness.

“Who is the Star King?” Snow White inquired. "I've never heard of him."

The very name gave her an involuntary chill. She knew that name from somewhere. It lurked at the back of her mind like a spider in the shadows.

“I shall not speak of him in case he hears me,” said the dragon. “You might be one of his spies sent down from the palace to trick me.”

“The palace doesn’t belong to the Star King.”

That’s when it hit her. The Star King was the nickname given to the god of their lands many centuries ago. When the people had rebelled at his wicked ways, he had been killed, thus revealing him to be a fake god. So, Prince Ryker’s palace once belonged to the Star King? She wished she’d known that before. It would’ve been yet another reason not to marry her Prince Charming.

“The Star King died a long time ago,” Snow White informed the dragon. “His followers rebelled and killed him. You have nothing to fear from him any longer.”

The dragon sat up, its eyes incredulous. “You are not mocking me? You are not trying to deceive me?”

“You can see into my mind as well,” said Snow White. “You know I’m not deceiving you.”

The dragon stared at her for a moment. His foray into her mind was clumsy and a little painful, but she wanted to reassure him. She was starting to like the poor thing.

“My name is Horatio,” said the dragon. “Thank you.”

“The Star King is dead, so that means the enchantment is broken.”

“I can leave here?”

“Yes.”

The dragon gave a terrified whimper and hid behind the mirror. It reminded Snow White of the cowardly dog she used to have as a child.

She walked up to the mirror, almost three times larger than herself. There was no way she and Trip would be able to carry this.
